Treatment

Used with permission
After hearing the advantages and disadvantages of our options the choice is made. This decision, as difficult as it was, lifted a huge weight off our shoulders.  I had a plan. I have the opportunity for a cancer-free life. I have the support of my husband. We can do this!

Bilateral Mastectomy - reducing the risk of reoccurance was what we decided would be the best going forward for the next 40 years of healthy living for our family.

Reconstruction options: Implants v. DIEP Flap
The DIEP flap is our choice.

This surgery will take approximately 10-12 hours. It will be a long day for Bob, the kids and the rest of our families. I am ready. We are ready.

Following surgery, I will have chemotherapy.  Chemotherapy is used to treat early-stage invasive breast cancer to get rid of any cancer cells that may be left behind after surgery and to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back. Source: Breastcancer.org  These treatments will be tailored to the type of cancer and the unique characteristics of the cancer after the pathology report is in.  There are many types of chemo drugs available with varying side effects.  From what I have read so far, the treatment is very individual. There will be another post on treatment and side effects later.

  2. Dear Shelley,
First of all I want you to know you and your family are in my prayers. I will continue to pray for you and for a full, uneventful recovery.
Next I wanted to say how thoughtful you are at this difficult time. You think of others and create this blog to ease the worry of others. Thank you for this!
Lastly, my friend, I want you to know that I am here for you and if you need anything you know how to get a hold of me...
    Love, Donna
