Shelly, You are in our prayers. We are Dana's parents and your Mom & Dad are great friends of ours. You may have already heard that Dana went through her first Chemo session. While at the Cancer Clinic we saw different posted comments by various cancer patients, but one in particular that caught our attention was " Getting through Cancer is 1/2 attitude and 1/2 patience". What a mind-boggling, heart-wrenching, roller-coaster to be forced to ride!!! It is no surprise that you have handled it all with such grace and fortitude, Shelley. It reminds me so much of how you organized "the troops" at Emma to get your cabin ready for the summer. (After everyone had finished unloading the van)- "Robbie, get up on the roof and get those leaves out of the gutter. Girls, get out the rakes and lets get this place cleaned up". I (Debbie), stayed hidden in my trailer quietly listening to the "Commander" take charge. New to the camping scene, I didn't know where to start. Plus I was kinda scared of the commander (Shelley). I was scared of you too Bob when you were behind the bench for the Brandon Wheat Kings (lol). Now you are organizing an army of troops (your family, friends, and community) to rally around you and support you in any way we can. I have no doubt that you will be able to navigate through this hardship with all the faith, love, and courage you have inside and all around you. I expect you might have trouble sleeping tonight, so thought you could remember when - you were 9 plus months pregnant and got stuck in the seatbelt in the truck - such manoeuvring to get out "gracefully???"; the times you got up at 5:00 am to shovel out the driveway ( while the three little ones were still sleeping) so you could get to work later; the time you got your prego pantyhose on backwards at work; the time we got caught in a snow storm coming home from PA to Bdn. and Mik was screaming bloody murder for something to eat - and on and on it goes. You figured out how to handle all these things and altho' tomorrow will be no cakewalk, you'll beat the heck ( this is public) out of this - because, of course, besides everything else, you know how to figure out the boiling point of water! She was such a lovely person to talk to, even during those few moments where I escorted you to the maternity ward. I remember your little one being born around the Memorial Cup in Peterborough. Shelley - I admire your determination, positive attitude and perseverance as you deal with the challenges. Bob, Shelley and Family. Thoughts and prayers are with you all from me and my family. I know everything will work out well for you guys and I look forward to more good news to follow. Bob, send me an email to Rorycary@gmail.com as one of Shelley's junior and high school friends went through a very similar process last year and she was recently cleared in 100% health. Her and I talked recently and I know she will be a great support to Shelley and your family but would rather keep her identity confidential to us for no other reason than simple respect.
Without a doubt you two have to turn this into a book. Not right now, Shelley doesn't need anything extra to do. Its the perfect combination of honesty, love, and humor. There are some great juice recipes from the book by Kris Carr on her website that you could turn into popsicles if eating is still as issue. Just guessing you would be good at this as well Bobby. You don't have to have a juicer, I make them in my vitamix but Im sure a powerful blender would work too. Take it easy Shelley, which I know will be hard for you. Always in my prayers Love Terry

Hi Shelley, I can feel the emotion that you and your family are induring through this journey as 7 years ago my family was on that same journey.....At the time I was so consumed by the fear and hope that I could not understand the "why". I now understand it, that this journey we took through the fight against cancer, allowed us to become a tighter family with the same focus. It allowed us as a family to slow down and focus on what is the most important thing in life: FAMILY/HEALTH. It changed my priorities and all of a sudden, money, careers, and material things were not that importants anymore. You too will find the reason for your journey and the gifts that come with it. Stay strong, you can have days where you give in, but never give up.
Love your sense of humor and glad to hear of such good reports. Also glad the package got there - hope you all had a hedgehog - a hug in a chocolate for each of you! Love always Doug and Lynne

Thumbs up Shelley on the treadmill...that's awesome!! Not sure which would make me feel better, walking for that long or getting my hair done. You're getting there. Once you get sleeping better and eating more there will be no stopping you and then I guess it sounds like Bobby will be out of a job. He's been kicked off the bench before (I can think of one time specifically, probably so can all the other BWk fans, lol) I have to say that thought that the two of you are an awesome team and together only makes you stronger. Shell, Wow! I just learned the news tonight on facebook and am in complete shock! It really makes you realize how precious life is and how to be thankful for all the important things! I'm so proud of you for being so strong...you are an absolutely amazing person with a pure zest for life. Thank you for the inspiration! Shelley, I guess I will have to blog once again. I sent one a few days ago but cannot find it on the site at all. Damn it all Woman! First you leave Central Office to hide out at the Department of Education. Then I drop in to see you but you are out for coffee. I come back in a couple of days and you are on holiday - Mexico? I think the Dept. has cameras and when you see me coming you tell the desk to fob me off! Then you were in the hospital and I knew they would not let me in. I will try to have a talk with the guy "Upstairs" but I don't thinkk I have much pull "up there". I can just hear Him asking 'Jerry who?' Leanne is a very nice young lady and she is at work when I drop in, unlike others I could name....but I miss your laugh and weird sense of humour.
Hi Shelley & Bob, Read your post today and thought I'd respond about the shortness of breath and leg cramps. Both are related to the surgery. The leg cramps may be from lack of appetite as well as the many hours immobilized for the surgery. For the breathing, try deep breathing exercises, sometimes the hospital will send you home with a little breathing device called an inspirometer. All it does is remind you to use it when you see it. Without an inspirometer you want to take 10 very deep breathes and blow them out slowly through pursed lips. Do this every hour you are awake. This sometimes makes you cough so have a pillow/cushion to brace your incision areas. Your lungs were sleeping for longer than anyone I personally know with your lengthy surgery(s). They need to build back strength. Your leg cramps will take a little more work and trial and error. It is NB! to be aware if the cramps are just in one spot like the back of your calves. Also watch for swelling, pain, redness and warmth. These are signs of a blood clot which I am sure you won't have because you were and maybe still are on blood thinners. Plus now you are mobile. What I would suggest is going on the tread mill 2-3 X's/day for 10 min at a time. For eg AM, afternoon and evening. Next try increasing your calcium and potassium. Drink milk(if you can) chew tums and eat a banana/day. Since you mentioned smoothies in a different blog this would be a great way to get calcium and potassium. Lastly, just keep doing what you're doing because it already sounds you're doing great! Take Care and remember you can call me anytime if you want to...I am always not far away. I wasnt sure if this would apply to you (And I just saw Donnas reply and she would know medical stuff better) but when I miss taking potassium or magnesium I always get cramps in my feet. Like I said, I don't know if that would apply to you or not. Wine is always an old stand by for pretty much anything...kidding!!!! Hope you are progressing and not overdoing. Talk soon. Hey there. I haven't responded for a couple of days but I haven't quit praying and I won't. Iam sure that was disappointing news and any disappointing news can make anyones faith waiver. Its funny how in my own life what Iam going through at the time relates to where I "happen" to land in my Bible also at the same time. What I read this morning could relate to you, me, any of this: Remember in Matthew 14 when Peter went to walk on the water and Jesus told him not to be afraid and to take courage cause He was there? Jesus reached out to grab him and said "You have so little faith, why did you doubt me?" Peters faith waivered when he took his eyes off Jesus and realized what he was doing. The point being, that to keep faith when situations are difficult, keep focusing on God's power rather than own inadequacies. This story always reminds me of the chicken/egg theory. I ordered a book for myself and I thought you might like it as well(Shelley) so I ordered you a copy too. I will mail it to you as soon as it comes. In the meantime... Ugh...Iam guessing that would be a somewhat frustating day. It made me think of Makayla's quote, "its okay not to always be okay" I loved that saying. It also reminded me of one of your emails Shelley on a day that you said you felt strong. it sometimes just sucks that we have to go through the good and the bad. I also felt the "spring has sprung" feeling that you mentioned Bobby and when I was walking yesterday I thought lots of newness, sprouting and energy and all those things I associate with you Shelley. Hi Shelley and family, Some positive things going on here, we can concentrate on these. The blood clots were found early and are being taken care of and monitered, this is good. Maybe blood will flow better now. I know it's hard but keep smiling, you have many people praying for you and you have your faith. You're in my prayers morning and night and sometimes in between. Just what the doc called for:-) Hugging is good medicine It transfers energy and gives the person hugged an emotional lift. You need four hugs a day for survival, eight for maintenance, and twelve for growth. Scientists say that hugging is a form of communication because it can say things you don't have the words for. And the nicest thing about a hug is that you usually can't give one without getting one. CEC is cheering for you, BBB and your family sending lots of hugs your way! Hey Shelley I have been following your blog (what a gift you have given to your friends and family)and continue to be amazed (but not surprised) at what you are going through, yet continue to seek and find the postives that are in your story. The caring of your circle of community is so evident in your blog and in the comments here, I know that someday, when you look back at the footprints in the sand, you will look at this time and see not only one set of footprints, but hundreds - those of all that are supporting you through thoughts, prayers and visits. You are right - Cancer sucks, but is messing with the wrong person!
Ok I admit. I am a blog stalker. I can't go to sleep at night without checking in. It's like reading a really good book with its share of suspense,humour, joy, frustration and tears. Cancer does Suck!!! But it never met you before, a strong, determined , positive, faithful person. You've already put up a hell of a fight and you're just powering up now. Yesterday's news sucks, but we are so glad your doctors are so on top of things. They seem to be so ahead of what is going on. Obviously right form the get go they realized what a wonderful person you and the whole family is/are??? We will be with you as always in our prayers. I am going to remember you and the 3 (very little) kids at Shaun and Darb's wedding ( nothing ever stopped you)and imagine you all at Jayme's. Maybe Robbie wouldn't be tramping up and down the pew with his big shoes this time!Remember that Rob. I have had one of those weeks (I hesitate to say that to you, as Iam sure you are thinking, really...and what kind of a week have you had?)The book I ordered you came yesterday Shelley so can you re-forward me you address as I want to send it to you. That husband of yours is very multi-talented. Its probably surprising what alot of us can do and deal with unless we are actually faced with having to. This morning I was reading about faith even as small as a mustard seed and it summed up alot about how I thought (you being in of those thoughts) this week. The last thing I read this morning and then I wrote in my journal was the words "Nothing would be impossible." Someone told me the other day that it is easy to have faith when everything in life is going along great, but your faith is really tested when your world is turned upside down. Yeah, no kidding. You do a great job of keeping us informed. You a definitely an educator at heart. My sister in law relayed a very similar story to yours about her own friend quite a few years ago. Her diag nosis,surgery, treatment and healing were also what was considered as "unique" They basically had to find what worked for "her cancer and body make up" That was about 8 years ago and today she is cancer free. However, when you really think about it, no two people are the same so why would one expect that the same cookie cutter recipe should work for everyone. And one thing I know for sure and Iam quite certain anyone who knows you would agree, you are a very unique woman. Always in my prayers Love Terry

I remember my sister and I going with my mom to look for wigs and after she had a little cry, we had so much fun trying on wigs and seeing how we would look (I could not go black) It gives new meaning to "you can be anything you want to be" What I noticed the first time I met you was your eyes and your smile (Oh and I would be lying if I didnt say your laugh) You have a great spirit and loved what you wrote this moorning. Thats awesome that you are starting to feel human. On a seperate note, I couldnt help but flash back to Bobby wearing your bathing suit in the hot tub at Marks when I saw him in the sleeping cap. Funny where your mind takes you. Thought of you today when I was struggling to finish working out...thats a great improvement on the treadmill. The wind went down but the rain started to fall here so hopefully the sun is out tomorrow. It was so nice to see Bobby, wish you could have been here with him. I couldn't tell he was ready to get back and given that fact that he gives you your needles, you need him back. Pretty amazing guy but then why wouldn't he be, he picked you. GO SENS GO!!!! Shelly, you need to buy a sock monkey to put between you and Bob. It will give you some protection and something else to hug!!! A trick with your needles, focus on your breathing. It is no surprise that you have handled it all with such grace and fortitude, Shelley. It reminds me so much of how you organized "the troops" at Emma to get your cabin ready for the summer. (After everyone had finished unloading the van)- "Robbie, get up on the roof and get those leaves out of the gutter. Girls, get out the rakes and lets get this place cleaned up". I (Debbie), stayed hidden in my trailer quietly listening to the "Commander" take charge. New to the camping scene, I didn't know where to start. Plus I was kinda scared of the commander (Shelley). I was scared of you too Bob when you were behind the bench for the Brandon Wheat Kings (lol). Now you are organizing an army of troops (your family, friends, and community) to rally around you and support you in any way we can. I expect you might have trouble sleeping tonight, so thought you could remember when - you were 9 plus months pregnant and got stuck in the seatbelt in the truck - such manoeuvring to get out "gracefully???"; the times you got up at 5:00 am to shovel out the driveway ( while the three little ones were still sleeping) so you could get to work later; the time you got your prego pantyhose on backwards at work; the time we got caught in a snow storm coming home from PA to Bdn. and Mik was screaming bloody murder for something to eat - and on and on it goes. You figured out how to handle all these things and altho' tomorrow will be no cakewalk, you'll beat the heck ( this is public) out of this - because, of course, besides everything else, you know how to figure out the boiling point of water! Thoughts and prayers to you and your family Bob. I remember checking Shell into the hospital when one of your children were born here in Brandon. She was such a lovely person to talk to, even during those few moments where I escorted you to the maternity ward. I remember your little one being born around the Memorial Cup in Peterborough. You were a tough hockey coach. Be sure to filter that strength to Shell. All Brandon hockey fans are pulling for a quick recovery. Very impressed with the blog. I will be checking back for updates. Without a doubt you two have to turn this into a book. Not right now, Shelley doesn't need anything extra to do. Its the perfect combination of honesty, love, and humor. There are some great juice recipes from the book by Kris Carr on her website that you could turn into popsicles if eating is still as issue. Just guessing you would be good at this as well Bobby. You don't have to have a juicer, I make them in my vitamix but Im sure a powerful blender would work too. Take it easy Shelley, which I know will be hard for you.

Hi Shelley, I can feel the emotion that you and your family are induring through this journey as 7 years ago my family was on that same journey.....At the time I was so consumed by the fear and hope that I could not understand the "why". I now understand it, that this journey we took through the fight against cancer, allowed us to become a tighter family with the same focus. It allowed us as a family to slow down and focus on what is the most important thing in life: FAMILY/HEALTH. It changed my priorities and all of a sudden, money, careers, and material things were not that importants anymore. You too will find the reason for your journey and the gifts that come with it. Stay strong, you can have days where you give in, but never give up.

Thumbs up Shelley on the treadmill...that's awesome!! Not sure which would make me feel better, walking for that long or getting my hair done. You're getting there. Once you get sleeping better and eating more there will be no stopping you and then I guess it sounds like Bobby will be out of a job. He's been kicked off the bench before (I can think of one time specifically, probably so can all the other BWk fans, lol) I have to say that thought that the two of you are an awesome team and together only makes you stronger.

Damn it all Woman! First you leave Central Office to hide out at the Department of Education. Then I drop in to see you but you are out for coffee. I come back in a couple of days and you are on holiday - Mexico?
I think the Dept. has cameras and when you see me coming you tell the desk to fob me off!
Then you were in the hospital and I knew they would not let me in.
I will try to have a talk with the guy "Upstairs" but I don't thinkk I have much pull "up there". I can just hear Him asking 'Jerry who?'
Leanne is a very nice young lady and she is at work when I drop in, unlike others I could name....but I miss your laugh and weird sense of humour.

ReplyDeleteRead your post today and thought I'd respond about the shortness of breath and leg cramps. Both are related to the surgery. The leg cramps may be from lack of appetite as well as the many hours immobilized for the surgery.
For the breathing, try deep breathing exercises, sometimes the hospital will send you home with a little breathing device called an inspirometer. All it does is remind you to use it when you see it. Without an inspirometer you want to take 10 very deep breathes and blow them out slowly through pursed lips. Do this every hour you are awake. This sometimes makes you cough so have a pillow/cushion to brace your incision areas. Your lungs were sleeping for longer than anyone I personally know with your lengthy surgery(s). They need to build back strength.
Your leg cramps will take a little more work and trial and error. It is NB! to be aware if the cramps are just in one spot like the back of your calves. Also watch for swelling, pain, redness and warmth. These are signs of a blood clot which I am sure you won't have because you were and maybe still are on blood thinners. Plus now you are mobile.
What I would suggest is going on the tread mill 2-3 X's/day for 10 min at a time. For eg AM, afternoon and evening.
Next try increasing your calcium and potassium. Drink milk(if you can) chew tums and eat a banana/day. Since you mentioned smoothies in a different blog this would be a great way to get calcium and potassium.
Lastly, just keep doing what you're doing because it already sounds you're doing great!

Hey there. I haven't responded for a couple of days but I haven't quit praying and I won't. Iam sure that was disappointing news and any disappointing news can make anyones faith waiver. Its funny how in my own life what Iam going through at the time relates to where I "happen" to land in my Bible also at the same time. What I read this morning could relate to you, me, any of this:
ReplyDeleteRemember in Matthew 14 when Peter went to walk on the water and Jesus told him not to be afraid and to take courage cause He was there? Jesus reached out to grab him and said "You have so little faith, why did you doubt me?"
Peters faith waivered when he took his eyes off Jesus and realized what he was doing.
The point being, that to keep faith when situations are difficult, keep focusing on God's power rather than own inadequacies.
This story always reminds me of the chicken/egg theory.
I ordered a book for myself and I thought you might like it as well(Shelley) so I ordered you a copy too. I will mail it to you as soon as it comes.

Ugh...Iam guessing that would be a somewhat frustating day. It made me think of Makayla's quote, "its okay not to always be okay" I loved that saying. It also reminded me of one of your emails Shelley on a day that you said you felt strong. it sometimes just sucks that we have to go through the good and the bad.

Yesterday's news sucks, but we are so glad your doctors are so on top of things. They seem to be so ahead of what is going on. Obviously right form the get go they realized what a wonderful person you and the whole family is/are??? We will be with you as always in our prayers. I am going to remember you and the 3 (very little) kids at Shaun and Darb's wedding ( nothing ever stopped you)and imagine you all at Jayme's. ReplyDeleteThat husband of yours is very multi-talented. Its probably surprising what alot of us can do and deal with unless we are actually faced with having to.
This morning I was reading about faith even as small as a mustard seed and it summed up alot about how I thought (you being in of those thoughts) this week. The last thing I read this morning and then I wrote in my journal was the words "Nothing would be impossible."
Someone told me the other day that it is easy to have faith when everything in life is going along great, but your faith is really tested when your world is turned upside down. Yeah, no kidding.
And saying uncle to God is pretty much what He is there for. Hope the sun is shining in Regina.

ReplyDeleteMy sister in law relayed a very similar story to yours about her own friend quite a few years ago. Her diag nosis,surgery, treatment and healing were also what was considered as "unique" They basically had to find what worked for "her cancer and body make up" That was about 8 years ago and today she is cancer free.
However, when you really think about it, no two people are the same so why would one expect that the same cookie cutter recipe should work for everyone. And one thing I know for sure and Iam quite certain anyone who knows you would agree, you are a very unique woman.

Hey Shelley - I am pretty sure that whatever you choose will work for you - and you know (and I am sure that BBB would agree) - there are only so many perfect heads out there, the rest are covered with hair. Don't discount the bald look till you try it!!

Thats awesome that you are starting to feel human. On a seperate note, I couldnt help but flash back to Bobby wearing your bathing suit in the hot tub at Marks when I saw him in the sleeping cap. Funny where your mind takes you. Hang on to that positive attitude cause even though it might not seem like it, we all have days that it takes someone like you to make us see the rainbow through the clouds.

Thought of you today when I was struggling to finish working out...thats a great improvement on the treadmill. The wind went down but the rain started to fall here so hopefully the sun is out tomorrow. It was so nice to see Bobby, wish you could have been here with him. I couldn't tell he was ready to get back and given that fact that he gives you your needles, you need him back. Pretty amazing guy but then why wouldn't he be, he picked you. God made you a teacher for a reason. I hope alot of us learn from you.
